Trails and trip descriptions on the northern tip of the West Mesa in Sandoval County outside the city of Rio Rancho.
Intro to Blog
When I moved Rio Rancho in 2011 from Eastern Massachusetts I had been off my mountain bike for about three years because of arthritis in my lower spine. I started to hike various parts of the mesa and discovered what I now know as the Rio Puerco Play Area which is also known as the End of the World.
Starting to wonder about getting back on my bike I got it tuned up and soon began riding the dirt roads behind my house. Soon I was taking the bike up to parking area at the end of Southern Blvd and exploring the roads and tracks there.
Alternating between hiking and biking using a GPS tracker and Google Earth I began to explore various trails that branched off Encino Road and at the end of Rainbow Blvd. What I discovered was a network of cattle paths, dirt bike trails, four wheel tracks connected by dirt roads. In the posts that follow I will describe the trails and trips I have established. Before those happen though my next post will be about the terminology I will use to describe various loops that I ride.
